Critiques?

Thu Sep 13, 2012, 12:21 PM
I've had several people ask me to critique their clay works for them, which got me thinking...

Would you guys like me to open up critiques here? Have you submit a piece for me to look at and I'll give you a full in depth critique for it.

It would be genuine constructive criticism, however, and I will point out any flaws I see and provide you with resources to help you improve.

Good idea? Bad idea?

Absolutely love the idea! I've just really started working with polymer clay and this really appeals to me, I totally think you should do it :D

Michaels is having their big sale now, so clay might be dirt cheap. I plan on stocking up this week if it is. :)

It might be the super big sale. As in, clay for like $1 - the good stuff, too. c:

If you think it'll be fun, then I think it's great. [Fun is what's most important!]

Not only will you be helping folks out, but in critically studying and critiquing others art, you can learn how to improve your own.

Cool idea.^^

Thanks! I just hope no one takes it personally when I do give criticism. I plan on being pretty forward with what looks off/wrong, so I hope I don't come off as "mean". :P

They'll know what they're getting into when they ask you. Just don't hold back, ever. If they complain, ignore them. They didn't want a critique anyways - this says it well: [link]

So stating clearly: I'd rather you gave me a brutally honest list of everything wrong with my art piece, even if you can't (or won't) tell me how to fix it, than have a sugar-coated critique.

An outside opinion is so very valuable, esp after an artist may spend countless hours looking at the same piece. So I'm thankful for what you can do for your fellow artists.

That is a awesome diagram! I've seen all the examples illustrated there, especially the "it's my style" argument used quite a bit on dA. :P

Yes! Compliments are very nice and I appreciate them, but I love receiving a good piece of constructive criticism even more. You're right - when you stare at a piece for hours on end, everything seems to blend together, so having a fresh pair of eyes is always appreciated. :)

"stare at a piece for hours on end" That is it yeah. Usually I'm sick of looking at it by then, so a fresh perspective sure helps! :D

I've seen the Princess Syndrome the most often here on dA. I had one person ask for a paint critique on a miniature person and when I said (nicely) the detail was a bit lacking they replied "It's only an inch tall..."

The above example is such a lazy attitude considering some artists carve statues out of rice and grains of sand. Even paint them! 0.0

But as I said earlier, I'm fine with a brutally honest critique. It may hurt to be reminded how much I need to improve, but I'm thankful for their honesty. And yours.

Agreed 100%!

Though I will admit that some of the critiques on here have looked more like personal attacks. dA is, and always will be, full of unneeded drama. :P

Great idea. I don't work with clay, or do miniatures, but if I did, I would definitely want your input and any tips or advice you'd be willing to give. :) Your work is wonderful!
